Three fishermen have been rescued after activating an emergency beacon south of Cape Sorell last night.

Just before 5.30 pm [AEST], two rescue helicopters, a search and rescue aircraft and a police boat began searching the area.

The aircraft found two of the men safe and well on the shore, but told the pilot they had become separated from their fellow fishermen and had not seen him for several hours.

They had activated the unregistered EPIRB to call for assistance in their search.

At about 8 pm [AEST], the third man was found several kilometres away in thick scrub trying to find his way back to Cape Sorell.
